Our first night dive did not go without some fun. The dive master Sam set the mood by dimming the lights and breaking some glow sticks and then jumped right into scary shark stories. He had us going and then eventually told us it was all a load of crap and sharks are harmless….right. We got the basics of night diving – suited up and jumped in. With our flashlights (they made sure that we all called them torches as they do here), it was actually fairly well lit – as long as it was in your (or someone else’s beam). There were only 5 of us including Sam for the night dive – almost everyone chose to not dive it seemed. We were at the same spot we did dive #3 but instantly I was lost. Sam led us around the Whale and I was loving it. It was a great mixture of being terrified but excited of what to see next. We saw a few turtles that we were warned to not wake by shining the light directly at them. One woke up right as Lora was near it and it started swimming for her – it ended up veering off but it was fun to watch. At the end, as we were about to climb the ladder back onto the boat there were a few sharks swimming around. First shark sighting in the water while diving (we saw a few before we started the night dive – the rest of the kids were feeding the fish and the sharks seemed to partake as well).
After the last dive of the day, we both showered and as we finished, they announced dessert was ready. We went down and had some pastry with whipped cream and it was delicious. We brought a few beers onboard and each had one to end the night. There was a large German crowd on the boat playing games but we were both exhausted and saw at the much quieter ‘adult’ table. We didn’t last long and soon headed to sleep. Tomorrow we’re being woken up at 6:45 for our first dive.
